10+ Hacks To Ease The Yearly Winter Struggles

Brace yourselves, winter is coming! Unless you’re in Australia or in South America, you lucky devil! While you enjoy your summer down there, the rest of us will be freezing half to death buried under a mountain of snow! I can hardly wait! Sloshing through the muddy snow, bent over by the sheer weight of the warm clothes, slipping on the icy patches: isn’t it lovely walking in a winter wonderland?

To face the terrible adversary that is the winter, we need to arm ourselves. With knowledge! Here are a few things, compiled by Shared, that you can do to soften to a certain degree this bothersome yearly struggle.

1. Get a grip!

Keep kitty litter in the car for when your tires can’t get any traction on the slippery ice. The gravel-like substance will absorb the moisture and expand, allowing for more friction and helping your tires catch some grip. If this doesn’t work, however, you can try using your floor mats, or throwing some salt.

2. SOS (Save Our Sweaters)

It’s just horrible when your favorite sweater starts to pill, and you know the time is nigh to say goodbye. Not anymore! Remove the pills with a razor. It won’t damage your sweater, just make sure it doesn’t have a moisture strip. Then you can use a Velcro roller to pick up the shaved fluffs. Works like a charm!

3. Screw Your Shoes

If you’re tired of slipping every other step you take, then you need to add more traction to your shoes. Insert some small screws into the sole for extra grip on slippery surfaces similarly to cleats on football boots. Obviously, make sure they don’t go all the way through the sole and into your foot.

4. Say ‘no’ to the ice

Make your own de-icing solution to keep your windshield from freezing with 2 quarts of rubbing alcohol, 1 cup water and 1 teaspoon of dish detergent. You can also prevent the ice on your walkway with a combination of 1 teaspoon liquid dish detergent, 1 tablespoon of rubbing alcohol, and 1.5 gallons of water.

5. Say ‘no’ to the fog

Here is another use for kitty litter: it can help you stop the windshield from fogging up. Get a sock, fill it with the stuff, and put it under your seat, or on the dash. Like we mentioned earlier, the kitty litter will absorb the moisture from the air.

6. Spin it right round

Make sure your ceiling fan turns clockwise in winter, because this way, it will push the warm air that has risen to the ceiling downwards, keeping you nice and warm all night long.

7. Avoid Hat Hair

Winter gives you two options: have your head freeze in the cold air, or put on a hat and completely ruin your hair. Neither of these choices looks particularly attractive, so let’s go for option three. The solution is dry shampoo. Bring some with you and when you arrive at your destination and remove your hat, spray some shampoo on your hair. Fluff it a bit with your hands, and, voilà, your hair will be back to normal!

8. Stick-no-more shovel

Who doesn’t hate shoveling snow every winter? You can make the process a bit quicker if you spray your shovel with a non-stick cooking spray or a silicone-based lubricant. This will help the snow roll from the shovel easier. This hack will probably save you just a few seconds, but why spend a single extra second out in the freezing cold, when you can be warm inside your house?

9. Waste naught

If you use a space heater or a stand-up radiator for heating purposes, this is the hack for you. Make sure no heat goes wastefully lost through the wall behind the heater by placing some aluminum foil between the two. The foil will reflect the heat back into your home.

10. Mirror mirror on the car

Car mirrors can take a lot of time to defrost. But since we don’t have time to wait in the morning, and we can’t drive until they unfreeze, then we must prevent them from freezing in the first place by putting them in a Ziploc bag overnight.

11. Keep calm and keep biking

Some people like using a bicycle in winter as well. But it’s dangerous unless you have snow tires, and those can be quite expensive. The cheaper alternative is putting zip ties around your tires every few centimeters; that way you will get the necessary traction.

12. Tall Boots Are Tall

Tall boots are the best, but they can be a pain when it comes to storing them. Their inability to stand upright can, however, be corrected by putting pool noodles (or anything else that is straight and tall) inside them. Now your boots take up less storage space and will look just as good when you decide to put them on again!

13. At dawn, look to the east

If you want to avoid sitting in your car every morning waiting for the windows to become see-through, then you should always park your car so the windshield is turned to the east. Have the sun do the defrosting for you.

14. Charge It

But, if you forgot or are unable to apply the previous tip, you can use your credit card to defrost your car. Sure, you could pay someone to do it for you, but what I meant was, you can scrape the ice from the windshield with the card. If you have a plastic spatula, you could use that instead.

15. Super Socks!

Make sure your windshield wipers don’t ice over and stick to your windshield by putting some socks on them. This way, you can actually use the wipers when you need them.
