The Smallest Baby To Ever Survive, Born 12 Weeks Prematurely, Weighs A Mere 0.8 Pounds

One of the most fascinating things in life is childbirth.

Carrying a growing baby inside of your body for nine months and the process of bringing that little life into the world leaves people in awe.

There are very few births that are quite as incredible as the one in this article.

Little Manushi was born 12 weeks prematurely and weighed just 0.8 pounds.

An average full-term baby weighs between six and nine pounds at birth.

0.5% Chance of Survival

Baby Manushi was born 12 weeks premature and weighed just 0.8lbs. Doctors gave her a 0.5% chance of survival. But, Manushi has beaten the odds. She is now six months old and finally able to go home after spending her whole life in the hospital.

Rise in Blood Pressure

Manushi’s alarming birth came unexpectedly when her mother, Seeta’s, blood pressure started to rise dramatically. The doctors were concerned about her and the baby’s health, so they did an ultrasound where they saw there was no blood flow to the fetus.

Time to Act

The doctors did not have much time to act. They chose to have Seeta deliver her baby 12 weeks prematurely via C-section. They thought that it was unlikely that the baby would survive, but Manushi had other plans for the world. She was able to breathe on her own with some difficulty.

At the time of her birth, Manushi’s lungs, kidneys, brain, and heart were underdeveloped. She had to be quickly moved to a ventilator in order to keep her organs functioning. Doctors were also concerned about her paper-thin skin. They were almost positive that Manushi would not survive being brought into this world so soon.

Tiny and Fragile

Manushi was just 8.6 inches long. She was extremely tiny and even more fragile. Because of this, she required extra attention from the hospital staff. Dr. Sunil Janged said, “She was struggling to breathe, so was immediately put on advanced respiratory support ventilator to expand her tiny, immature lungs.” They had to start Manushi on parenteral nutrition which means they had to give all of her essential nutrients like carbohydrates, minerals, amino acids, and multivitamins directly into her blood circulation.

High Medical Bills

Because of Manushi’s extensive medical needs, the bill for her care had reached Rs1,000,000 ($15,746). Thankfully, the bill was covered by the hospital because her parents were a low-income family.

Sending A Message

“We decided to save the life of the baby and offer her necessary medical care and attention because we wanted to send out a message that a girl child must be protected,” Dr. Janged explained. “In a state like Rajasthan where female infanticide is rampant, people have to come forward and take a step to end this evil practice.”

Going Home

Manushi is now six months old and has been able to finally go home. She is believed to be developing normally. There is no doubt that she will need more medical assistance in her future, but for now, she is a beautiful, healthy and happy little girl.
